Holiday-proof
Saturday 10 February 2007 at 12:19 pm. Sowing is great fun, but not the most practical craft one can choose. Indeed, you can make clothes exactly the way you want in exactly the size you need. But you can’t take it with you… ever seen someone sowing in the bus? Or carrying an overlocker and a tent? And while boarding a plane, you can’t take a pair scissors in your hand luggage… (or in your shoe.) So I’m desperate need of a holiday-proof-craft.Here’s a list of things that didn’t work out:
1. Macramé: it’s great fun, but it doesn’t take a lot of time. After one week of holiday, twelve years ago, I’ve still got more bracelets than friends left.
2. Knitting: used to be a disaster… after one row of knitting I’d forgotten how to purl… and after one row of purling I’d forgotten how to knit. Maybe I’ve just got to carry on, and carry on and carry on…
3. Photography: there’s no immediate satisfaction of my crafting-needs... unless I bring a laptop and a printer (or for the oldies: chemicals and a dark room.) But I can’t put that in my rug sack, can I?
4. Collecting sticks and splintering them with a sharp knife: no need to explain this one, is there?
5. Drawing: paper and a Dutch campsite do not work well together.
6. Reading: even more fun than all of the above… but reading fifty tot seventy pages an hour, I’ve got to bring a total of books with a weight equal to an overlocker AND a sowing machine. So that’s no good either…
7. Corking: as soon as someone will tell me what to do with ten yards of corked thread… I’ll start again.
Recap, I’ll think I’ll start knitting again (with some help) and try my hand at embroidery…
