Herb of the Year
Wednesday 09 April 2008 at 08:22 am.Ask any one person who knows a bit about herbs something about Calendula off and they'll start to smile and glow and generally give off a very happy vibe. So i was very happy to stumble upon the notification that it is going to be the herb of the year 2008! Gives me a good reason to write something about this wonderful and gorgeous plant...

Actions: Vulnerary, anti-inflammatory, lymphatic, styptic (haemostatic), antimicrobial, antiviral (topically), antifungal (topically).
Potential indications: Internal and topical treatment for inflammation of the oral and pharyngeal mucosaInternal treatment for gastric and duodenal ulcers; enlarged or inflamed lymphnodes, acne, sebaceous cystsInternal treatment for spasmodic conditions, including dysmenorrhoeaTopical treatment for burnsTopical treatment for inflammation of the skin and mucosa, wounds, especially poorly healing woundsTopical treatment for leg ulcers, venous circulatory problems, scalds; to help control bleedingTopical treatment for eczema, varicose veins, haemorroids, acne, vaginal discharges
Contraindications: Known allergy.
Warnings and precautions: The likelihood of Calendula preparations causing a contact allergy is low. However, people with known sensitivity to toher members of the Compositae family should avoid topical application of Calendula of Calendula products. Sensitization to Calendula and allergic contact reactions have been reported. Anaphylactic shock after gargling with an infusion of Calendula has also been reported.
Interactions: None known.
Use in pregnancy and lactation: No adverse effects expected.
Side effects: Allergic reaction occurs rarely following topical application.
Dosage: Per day: 1.5-4.5 ml of 1:2 liquid extract
Per week: 10-30 ml of 1:2 liquid extract
